What Causes Metallic Taste In The Mouth When Diagnosed With Strep Throat?
I was diagnosed with strep throat a few days ago but right before that I got a metallic taste in my mouth and food tastes horrible. I can hardly swallow and throat burns. I was given a Zpak but not helping a lot yet. I have 2 more pills to take. Is this typical of strep ? Ibuprofen is not helping either and I am waking up in the middle of the night only to take more ibuprofen. I am feeling pitiful bad.
Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of metallic taste in the mouth when diagnosed with strep throat which seems to be due to infection in throat i.e respiratory tract infection and could be due to side effects of medications.
Need not to worry. I would suggest you to start with warm saline gargles and betadine gargles 3-4 times a day. You should take salivary stimulation substitutes as that will increase flow of saliva. For pain and swelling you should take ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Consult ENT specialist for proper diagnosis and rule out condition like strep throat and viral infection . Doctor may prescribe antibiotics along with decongestants and anti inflammatory . Avoid hot, sharp , spicy food substances and carbonated beverages and do warm saline rinses.
Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes, Dr. Harry Maheshwari
