What Causes Middle Chest Pain And Pressure With Severe Heartburn?
I have been having middle chest pain and pressure with severe heartburn at times. I have a full feeling in my throat area and upper chest. I was diagnosed 20 years ago with a bad case of GERD. Well this has been going on for at least 6 months now. I do not think it is gerd, because nothing I take helps. I have never had anything like this in my life and I am 52. I am short of breath all the time. My dr. said my lungs and heart are fine. What could this be? It even hurts to drink water. Everything I eat or drink lately feels like it is sitting in my esophogaus. Help?
It can be due to esophagitis or gastritis but for such symptoms, repeat EKG and echocardiogram should be done to rule out cardiac cause. Possibility of achalasia or mechanical obstruction in the food pipe should be ruled out. Manometry or barium swallow test should be done. Upper GI endoscopy may be needed if others are unremarkable. Using motilly agents like domperidone or itapride before meals alongside antacids may be helpful.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
Regards,
Dr. Saddiq Ulabidin, General & Family Physician
