Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
my husband is complaining of pain on his side near his back but not in the center of his back. started 11pm fri night. continuing now. he says not as severe as a hernia maybe feels like a muscle strain but didn;t lift anything. He is 75, obese, only 1 kidney.
Many diseases of the kidney do not cause severe pain in the back so it is possible that there may be another cause.
Though he did not lift any objects, sudden movements or turns can cause the muscles to go into spasm which would cause pain. He may want to consider the following: (1) warm compress to the area to relax the muscles This can be done 2 to 3 times a day for 15 to 20 mins
(2)anti inflammatory pain medications if he is permitted to use these eg naproxen, cataflam, ibuprofen
(3)a muscle relaxant would also help eg soma, baclofen, flexeril. A prescription may be needed
if there is no relief or the pain worsens, he should be seen.
I hope this helps
