What Causes Mild Pain And Bloating Of Stomach?

I m experiencing a discomfort just below the sternum and above my belly button feeling like bloating/swelling accompanied by moderate pain. Onset began about noon this past Sunday at lunch; no spicy or undercooked food; not as uncomfortable during the day but mostly when I lay down at night. I ve slept 2 hours tonight and couldn t endure staying in the bed. Conditions subside about 70% when upright. I ve only felt inclined to vomit once this past Monday about 10PM...salivated heavily...but was unable to vomit. Had a BM less than 12 hours ago...nothing abnormal...no diarrhea...no temp BP 137/77 about 3 hours ago.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You are suffering from mild pain and bloating stomach. You are also having discomfort below the sternum. Your symptoms are indicative of GERD, heartburn, esophagitis, abdominal muscle strain, etc. You are suggested to take protein pump inhibiters, Pan-40, one stat when needed for relieve. You can also take antacids. Take fiber in your diet and avoid constipation.

Take adequate water and fluids. Stay away from addictions, smoking , alcohol, drugs, etc. You are suggested to get clinically examined by a GP, get required blood tests and chest X-ray, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) scan done to detect any fracture breastbone, pancreatitis, liver dysfunction, lower lobe pneumonia, or ulcer (peptic/esophageal), etc. Your treatment will depend on the pathology detected and the severity of the symptoms.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
