What Causes Mild Swelling At The Back Of The Throat And Tongue?

Hi, I have had a slight swelling to the back of my tongue and throat for a few weeks now. It doesn t hurt, it just feels swollen all the time, and a little bit raw. It almost feels like the beginning of an episode of anyflaxis from one of my many food allergies, but it doesn t get severe like that, it has stayed pretty much at the same level for the past two weeks. I m wondering if this could be thrush or something serious? Or if it s just allergens in the air... Thank you, Elizabeth

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history related to swelling at the back of tongue and throat lasting for 2 weeks without much change.
The most probable causes I can think about with the short history without any photos are as follows:
The swelling at hte back of tongue is usually due to swollen lingual tonsils as we call, this is a conglomeration of lymphatic tissues to guard against any infection of tongue and oral cavity.
The lymphoid tissue in the pharynx can appear as swelling at hte back of throat.
This can be due to any incidence in past with an infection and has persisted.
I would advise you the following in such a situation:
Consult an ENT Surgeon for clinical evaluation, examination and ENT Endoscopy along with the tests of blood.
May need a course of an antibiotic and an anti-inflammatory medications and will settle eventually.
Watch for any infective focus in the oral cavity like caries or so.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant, ENT & General Surgeon
