What Causes Missed Bowel Movements With Abdominal Pain Post Taking Miralax?
Hi, normally I have bowel movements at least 3 times a day. For the past 4 months movements have slowed to now nothing unless I take a laxative. I went o the ER as now having pain / discomfort on the lower left side of my stomach. A Ct scan was done on my abdomen and I was told that everything was normal. Was told that there was stool in my bowel and I should take MiraLax and was given a script for pain. Now 2 days later I have taken the Miralax but no movement and now I have taken magnesium citrate and still no movement. What should I do? Please advise.
I would suggest you to use stool softener like lactulose or bisacodyl instead of magnesium citrate. Magnesium citrate can itself cause constipation and is better avoided. Lactulose can be taken 15 ml at night. This drug can take 2 to 3 days to produce significant bowel movement. Adequate hydration and high fibre diet should be taken regularly.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Saranya Ramadoss, General & Family Physician
