What Causes Mitral Valve Murmur And Does It Require Surgery?

I have recently been found to have a heart murmur, which according to the ecocardiogram is due to a malfunctioning mitral valve. The murmur lasts the whole length of systole. My questions are: How common is mitral valve problems? and would a valve surgery be the ultimate solution?
