My mother has been diagnoised with Monoclon Paraprotein-emia. Is this a form of blood/bone cancer? In layman terms what is the definition? What is the cause? What is the treatment for someone that is 85 years old. We want comfort and quailty of life.

Hi,

I have read your query and got that your mother is suffering from MGUS, Monoclonal Gammapathy of undetermined Significance or Monoclonal proteinemia. In MGUS, there is increase in the blood levels of Monoclonal proteins or simply called as M Proteins. This protein is formed from the bone marrow from where the blood cells are synthesized. It is commonly seen in old age men. Most of the time, the condition is asymptomatic.

In some individuals, this MGUS may turned into blood cancer. The cause for the disease are not specific. Commonly seen in older age group, men and with positive family history. Most common cancers following MGUS are multiple myeloma, lymphoma, Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia. Osteoporosis is the common findings. Symptoms include bone pain, dizziness, headache nerve pain, weight loss, etc. Investigations are blood test, MRI scan, PET Scan, DEXA for bone density and bone marrow biopsy. Medication to increase the bone density are prescribed more often to prevent bone weakness and fracture.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
