Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Mood Swings After Excessive Intake Of Dilantin?
I am a licensed psychologist and recently referred my patient to the emergency because he said he swallowed 32 Dilantin. He seemed to have elevated mood and I was wondering whether that would be the Dilantin or whether he had taken some other substance. He is usually depressed with blunted affect/mood and lethargic. During this session he was more goal directed, talkative, with elevated mood that is a marked departure of his usual presentation, Thanks.
It is good to know that you immediately referred him to the emergency. Dilantin overdose may lead to toxicity & coma.
Yes, the symptoms you mentioned are indicative of dilantin overdose but he could have taken some other drug in addition to it that was causing elevated mood.
It can be tested in the ER by blood/urine tests, CT scans, Ecg, chest X-ray. High mood is commonly due to THC which stimulates the brain.
Balance gets messed up & cognition gets reduced/impaired. Inadequate supply of oxygen to the brain can cause brain damage.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Nupur K, General & Family Physician
