Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have had C-diff 3 x s this year. I also have IBS. In the last 2 months I have had mucus with bright-red blood. Have been followed by my GI Doc. C-diff have been over since 2nd week of July. Now the IBS wants to give me a fit. For this past week, have had mucus with blood. Last night, lots of it. What are your thoughts...What is the mucus & blood all about. Have been scoped, First of May. GI has looked at it several times, and I look very clean in my bowel track.
The presence of mucus in stool is common. And normal in some amounts however a large amount of visible mucus in your stool isn’t normal and might be a sign of a problem. If you begin seeing mucus in your stool, the levels are probably already elevated. That doesn’t necessarily indicate you have a problem, but it’s something you should monitor especially if there is blood in stool or pain during defecation.
In such cases, it may be caused by inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's or ulcerative colitis. IBS or infectious colitis are another causes but it would be assoictaed with fever and loose stools. All in all, you should wait for few days, have easy diet, lot of fluids and see will it improve. If not you should do colonoscopy as a start of work up.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
