What Causes Mucus Discharge In Stool?

This is kind of embarrassing. A few days ago I noticed that I had mucus kind of coating my stool. For the last couple of days I've had a mucus discharge which occurred all day without me realizing it. Today I used a pad, after having to change my clothes this morning. I am 61, have type two diabetes but am otherwise healthy. I do suffer from gas.
