What Causes Muffled Sounds And Ringing Sensation In The Ears?

Hi, yesterday I got my eardrum ruptured. When I woke up, the ringing had stopped and all that is left is a muffled sound in my ear. I know I should protect my ear from water, but was wondering if I could use an earplug to protect my ear throughout the whole day. Is this okay to do or should I only cover it when showering? Sincerest thanks, Anneleen

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I am sorry to see that you have an eardrum rupture.

I suggest you to:
1) Place a waterproof silicone earplug or cotton ball coated with petroleum jelly in your ear when showering or bathing.
2) Give your eardrum time to heal completely.
3) Avoid blowing your nose.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi,
