What Causes Multiple Sclerosis After A Brain Injury?
my son had a brain injury in 1998, the ct indicated the deep white matter of the right frontal lobe is slightly hypoattenuating compared to the left, also a question of sulcal effacement in right frontal lobe compared to the left, there was soft tissue swelling overlying the right parietal bone. My son was diagnosed with MS about a year later and has been bed ridden since, the question is since the medical field does not have a cause for MS, could my sons case be caused by a traumatic brain injury he had in 1998? He has been thru chemotherapy and stem cell and had DBS implants placed in both sides of his brain. He is currently in End Stage MS
Hello and welcome to HCM, The exact pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis is not known. Multiple sclerosis is caused by demyelination of white matter or removal of protective sheath over neurons. Whether multiple sclerosis can be caused by brain injury is not yet proven. Multiple sclerosis can only be managed but not treated.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja Puri
