In your case, doctors are dealing with a defect called atrial septal defect (ASD). Mostly, it is congenital and asymptomatic if very small but can present with palpitation, chest pain, and shortness of breath. If not treated, it may affect your heart and can lead to heart failure and other complications.
Closure of this defect by intervention has usually very optimal results with long term improvement. In my opinion you should opt for the treatment offered to you before it further worsens your heart particularly the right heart chambers.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Syed Hashim Ali Shah, General & Family Physician
