Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi I m a 47 year old female. I do not smoke, drink. I weigh approx 150 lbs. I take 10mg of lipitor to control hereditary high cholesterol. The lipitor has worked very well but I am now experiencing aching in my muscles that is affecting my sleep and comfort during the day. It mainly affects my large muscles, legs, butt, thighs. The only other health issue I have going on is my ferritin levels are extremely low and I am taking a prescription iron supplement. Do you think I need to stop taking the Lipitor? Or is there another drug that can help my cholesterol without the body aches?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hello,
Lipitor is known to cause muscle cramps. It also can lead to lack of sleep. It is also known to cause diarrhea or constipation thus affecting food digestion and absorption which in turn can lead to low absorption of iron and add to your anemia. Any type of lipid-controlling drug is bound to have such effects in more or less proportion.
So though having a hereditary predisposition to high cholesterol and your lipid profile is in normal limits, I would advise to drop Lipitor and follow a strict healthy lifestyle (a low caloric & high protein, vitamins, and minerals nutritious diet with low or no fats, 45 minutes physical work out per day and avoid sedentary lifestyle, 6 hours of sound sleep, avoiding psychological stress or tension, and positive psychology). This would give you better control on cholesterol and without any side effects.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Vasudha Jayant Athavale
