What Causes Muscle Spasms In The Shoulder And Upper Back?
Pain began suddenly this evening in right shoulder blade and around under arm into right side of chest. Severe spasms, took ibuprofen and used TENS muscle stimulator. Finally started getting better but started feeling gastritis type discomfort. Took mylanta and that has gotten some better. Pain in shoulder blade around to chest has stopped completely. I threw a ball with grandkids today and thought maybe that is what caused muscle spasms?

The pain you experienced is likely due to muscle strain. However, I recommend getting an EKG done to rule out coronary artery disease (especially since you experienced gastritis-like pain). The risk for CAD increases in patients with hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, positive family history, smoking.
