What Causes Muscle Spasms In Upper Thighs And Buttocks Post Lumbar Puncture?

I had a lumbar puncture a week ago. No major complications but I m experiencing muscle spasms in my upper thighs and buttocks. I have some relief when I lay down but it s very unpredictable and painful when they occur (most painful and long when I stand and start to walk). Is this normal? When will it subside and when can I resume my exercise regimen?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The symptoms seem to be related to muscle spasms. The muscle spasms are not a common side effects of the lumbar puncture. I suggest using a muscle relaxant such as Baclofen three times a day. I also suggest using magnesium supplements for muscle relaxation.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
