Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello! I am 65- I have been taking generic Atorvastatin/calcium for about a year-- I am a cancer survivor in 2012-- I read the attached to my prescription and it mentioned a muscle problem could occur. I mentioned this to my doctor along with the spasms and cramping I have been experiencing and he didn t seem alarmed about it but my cramps and spasms sometimes occur when I am just standing and not exerting any-- I can lift heavy things( stocker at a walgreens/ photo specialist) with out any cramping-- sometimes when I buckle my seatbelt my side cramps or if I lean over to pick up something my lower back muscles cramp-- I put my coat on and my shoulder blade muscles cramp--- very odd. My doctor says all I need to do is stretch before work or before I exert any physical movements--Like right now while I am typing my shoulder blade muscles are cramping. I think there is more to it so that is why I am asking about the atorvastatin and it s side effects. Thankyou
You are very right, statins do cause muscle problems and we must be vigilant toward it. We check this by checking a blood test called CPK that indicates muscle damage. If that is raised then we definitely put it to statin and we stop it. However, if that is normal then it's unlikely and we need to see for other causes.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
