Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Muscle Weakness And Excessive Sleepiness?
My brother, who is a 69-year-old caucasian, had a stroke about 7 years ago that caused the muscles on his right side to become almost useless. No paralysis, but a weakening of muscles. Some days he acts extremely sleepy and his speech is very slow and slurred, so much so that it concerns me. The next day he may act much better. It may not happen again for several weeks. He says it s because he needs more sleep. I may need more sleep sometime, too, but my speech is never slurred like that. What could be wrong? Is it really only needing more sleep, or something more?
I passed carefully through your question and would explain that your brother symptoms could be related to post-stroke depression.
For this reason, I would recommend consulting with a neurologist or psychiatrist for a physical exam and cognitive tests.
It is also important for performing some lab tests (complete blood count, for anemia, thyroid hormone levels for thyroid gland dysfunction, kidney and liver function tests, fasting glucose.)
You should discuss with your doctor on the above tests.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Ilir Sharka,
Cardiologist
