What Causes Nasal Drainage And Coughing In A Child After Taking Amoxicillin?

Hello. I have a child that is 9 years old and currently taking Amoxicillin for a sinus infection. His complaint is nasal drainage, sneezing, sore throat, coughing and body aches. I was wondering if he would be able to take severe cold and cough. This is in a packet form not pill form. This medication says not for children under 12. But he has taken other medication that has said the same. They have just based it on his weight. He currently weight 115.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I would not recommend using over the counter medications for a child his age. Studies have not shown a clear benefit, and there could be dangerous side effects, especially at his age.

For cough, another treatment you could try is honey. I usually recommend using a teaspoon of honey mixed with juice, 3-4 times a day.

For nasal congestion, nasal saline sprays along with bulb suction would be the safest treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
