What Causes Nasal Drainage And Persistent Cough Despite Taking Flonase?

Woke up Saturday 4/9 with terrific sore throat, which developed into sinusitis (diagnosed by dr., who prescribed Flonase and Sudafed.) I have continued to have sinus drainage, which causes nearly constant coughing. Now when I breathe deeply, I whistle and squeak! Sinuses continue to drain heavily. I Dr. said to come back if I wasn t better in 10 days. Today is day 8, and I am going downhill. Is it likely that the virus has devolved into a bacterial infection, and/or pneumonia?

Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain it seems that you still have sinus congestion due to fluid accumulation in the sinuses as you are still having sinus drainage and also whistling or squeaking..
It does not looks like Pneumonia and most probably is due to Sinusitis only.

It seems to be bacterial infection and Flonase that is a steroid and Sudafed is a decongestant will help but you need a proper antibiotic coverage after a proper diagnosis and treatment plan..

I would suggest you to consult an ENT expert and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like PNS view or MRI Scan of x ray can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly..

You can be advised a a course of antibiotics like Augmentin, anti-inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen, decongestants like Pseudoephadrine [sudafed], mucolytics like Ambroxol,do saline nasal irrigation, steam inhalation and use a humidifier in your room..
Doing saline nasal irrigations can help..
You can also be advised decongestant nasal sprays containing Xylometazoline or Oxymetazoline..
Avoid spicy and chilled foods..
Do warm compresses around nostrils..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
