What Causes Nausea And Appetite Loss While On Fosamax?

I am a 71 year old woman and was recently diagnosed with ostopenia. My Dr. recommended that I take 70 mg of Fosamax weekly as well as to increase my calcium to 1200 mg. a day ( mostly from food) and also taking 50,000 IU due to slightly low Vit. D. results. I did so and the second week I was on it I was absolutely miserable. I had nausia , stomach and intestinal pain, loss of appetite and issues with constipation. Is there another type of drug that would be as effective for me as I do not want to try a biophosphate drug again. It has been three weeks since taking it and it is just now going away. Thank you. PS...my mother did have osteporosis.

Hello,

Certain estrogen products e.g Conjugated Estrogens (Premarin 0.625 mg) may also be taken by women after menopause for osteoporosis. It is a prescription drug.

Instead of oral biphoshphonate(Aledronate),which may not be tolerated by all ,a once- a year infusion of zoledronic acid (5 mg) for a 3-year period can be taken for Osteoporosis in combination with Estrogens.

However serum creatinine level should be normal. Vit D 50,000 units should be taken once a week for 08 weeks and recheck serum 25(OH) Vit D level. Vitamin D insufficiency is defined as a serum 25(OH)D level of 21-29 ng/mL.

If above 30 ,switch over to daily Vit D oral 800 units is advisable to avoid hypervitaminosis D.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
