What Causes Nausea And Diarrhea After Having Food?

For the last three-four days, our son (7 years old) tends to feel sick after he eats lunch - naseau, cramps, and sometime diarrhea. It seems to go away, but it s pretty bad for an hour or two. He doesn t seem to have any other cold/fever, just upset stomach. He feels like he is either going to throw up or it just hurts. We have been trying to get him to wash hands after the bathroom - and he is in a kids-after school program with a lot of children. He has been putting his fingers in his mouth more and more lately as he is losing his baby teeth.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi there,

It is too soon to say if it is anything more than a simple infection, but I would recommend medication for his cramps like hyoscine butylbromide while he waits for his body to fight it off. A probiotic supplementation in powder or capsule form will also help to speed up his recovery, if he gets this often you might even consider giving it to him as a daily preventive supplement. Make sure he drinks enough water, and try to give him easily digestible foods like bread or rice or pasta. Limit his dairy and protein intake, as these are a little bit more difficult to digest, and may make the cramping and diarrhoea worse.

Get help if the cramping is persistent and doesn't resolve, or if the symptoms last for over a week to 10 days, or if he's not able to take his fluids.

Hope this helps, please let us know if you have further questions.

Regards,
Dr. Teh
