What Causes Nausea And Vomiting Post A Gastric Sleeve Surgery?
Hi. My 18 year old daughter had gastric sleeve surgery on June 28th this year and has had complications where there was a pouch formation that caused nausea and vomiting. She had a gastroscopy where the surgeon opened the stomach with a balloon, but 2 - 3 weeks down the track she s still not eating much at all and not losing any weight after the initial loss at the start. She is now in the process of having bariatric rehab but in the meantime, my daughter is depressed and thinking that life is not worth living anymore and my husband and I are depressed, wondering whether this will improve for her. Can you tell me if you know that her situation will eventually improve. I feel that we are sitting her waiting and waiting. Thank you. Rosie
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history about your 18 year old daughter and understood the concerns. I can understand the situation you all must be going through and thus would also recommend to see a Psychologist or a Psychiatrist for counselling as you have specifically mentioned about your daughter going into depression. I was wondering what makes her not loosing weight in spite of not taking adequate intake, please calculate the 24 hour input she is taking and list it so that a Nutritionist can help her better. Formation of a pouch is a known complication of gastric sleeve as the pyloric sphincter is saves and working in this situation and thus may build up positive pressure causing nausea and vomiting, pain etc. I would further advise her to consult the Surgeon or take another opinion so that a bypass surgery can help her the best as the pressure would not develop and the fluids and food goes directly to the small intestines and thus there is no more obstruction to the outflow and may loose weight further. She will definitely improve with this.
