Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am taking cephalexin for a skin infection that had recurred. I am having nausea side effects and not sure I can handle four 500mg pills per day. Does the dosage for cephalexin oral vary with a patient s weight? I weigh about 110 to 115 pounds and I know average dosing with most oral medications is for a weight of 165 pounds or so. I am wondering if 3 of the 500mg cephalexin/day will suffice, since I seriously doubt I can take a 4th pill per day without vomiting.
The dose of Cefalexin does vary with the weight of a patient and the maximum dose can be up to 4 gm per day depending upon the condition and weight of the patient. You have not mentioned the name of the skin condition you are suffering from so I cannot comment on whether three doses of Cefalexin will be sufficient.
I will suggest you take an antacid like tab. Ranitidine or tab. Pantoprazole for the duration you are taking the antibiotic.
It will help to reduce the gastric acidity which is aggravated by the antibiotics and relieve your nausea. Also, make sure to take the antibiotic only after meals.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nazma.amman,
