What Causes Nausea While On Topamax?

I have been taking Topamax for 3 months. This last month I have been experiencing severe reactions to smells to the point that I am nauseous almost constantly. I am also having severe lroblems with my eyes. Do you think it is a reation to this medication? I have never had a problem like this before. It is miserable and I don t know if I should just stop taking it or what to do.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Topamax is a drug belonging to the antiepileptic group. It is a drug also used to treat a migraine, mood disorders, among others.

Clearly, you are correct, this drug can produce several side effects, among these: visual disorders and nausea.

Likewise, this drug has been linked to glaucoma, although less likely.

I recommend you do an eye check with an ophthalmologist before continuing the treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Luis Alberto Urdaneta Arenas, General & Family Physician
