What Causes Neck Pain And Stiffness While Diagnosed With Viral Throat Infection?

I have been experiencing bad neck pain and stiffness beginning Friday night. All day Saturday the pain got progressively worse. I took Tylenol throughout the day but each time it wore off it would be worse than previously, I also used moist heat trying to relieve the pain. Saturday at 3am I woke up unable to move my head at all, I tried ice this time and fell back to sleep. When I woke up at 6 my pain had me in tears, it was unbearable but I had a new symptom. My throat was swollen. My uvula was very enlarged and felt like it was restricting my breathing. I went to the ER. After blood work, an X-ray and a urine test I was diagnosed with viral throat infection. They gave me iv steroids and iv Motrin. It significantly relieved the pain and stiffness and I was told to use Tylenol and Motrin for pain. I am not supposed to take Advil type meds because of my lap band. But Tylenol does not work. So I have been crushing Motrin and putting it in liquid and drinking it. I m still concerned that it is dangerous for my band. Yesterday the Motrin worked very well, but today the pain is progressively getting worse. My uvula is still slightly swollen but nothing like it was. My question is at what point do I go back to the dr. The pain in my neck is very intense and keeps getting worse throughout the day. I don t want to wake up in the middle of the night in the same position as early Sunday morning. Should my neck be having such severe pain with a throat infection?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

* As the pain is very intense with the throat swelling and difficulty in breathing, I would recommend an ER visit for

- nebuliser therapy if there is inadeqate oxygenation or bronchospasm

- intravenous antibiotics for relief of infection

- morphine shot

* In my clinic, I do recommend an observation for a period of couple of hours after IV shot, to monitor the progress and if needed also recommend intravenous therapy at home by qualified nurse assistant.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel
