Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am 69 year old female. I have an annual checkup ever year. Had my last check up in Jan. 2015. Blood work and check up normal.. I take no RX s and have no known health issues. However, I am awaken every night, in fright, with a pounding heart beat and sweats. It is temporary and passes and I am eventually able to fall back to sleep. Why does this happen? I do practice mediation and find it helps but I am concerned that it happens several times every night.
Pounding heart beat and sweating can be due to cardiac pathology or anxiety. I suggest you to consult a cardiologist for clinical assessment to rule out any cardiac ailment. In case no abnormality is detected then, these symptoms can be due to anxiety.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Your symptoms are suggestive of a sleep disorder (nightmares). For this reason, I recommend consulting with a neurologist for a physical exam and performing a polysomnogram. Clonazepam may help improve your situation.
