What Causes Nightmares After Taking Seroquel?

I took Seroquil 50 mg for the first time last night for sleep, I had a nightmare and was trying to wake up, I was paralyzed, I could not move, so intense. I have felt terrible all day. I went to bed at 1am and could not get myself up until 1pm. Shaky all day. I heard it s a anti psychotic drug. Why would my dr. Prescribe this for me?

Hi,

Seroquel (Quetiapine) is an antipsychotic medication. If you do not have any mental problems & just have insomnia/anxiety, you may stop taking the medication prescribed after informing the treating PCP.

He may switch you to another medication. In the meantime, you can take Alprazolam-0.25mg once daily at bed time for 7-10 days. Do not get drug dependent.

If you have symptoms of sleep paralysis get physically examined you may be suffering from narcolepsy, developing neurological issue (an autoimmune disease may get triggered by brain trauma or injury).

If you are diagnosed with narcolepsy you will need other medications as well.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr Nupur K, General & Family Physician
