Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have had 3 utis this year. I felt the onset of one and starting taking antibiotics from a past uti that I had left over, after 4 days my symptoms didn t get better so I went to the doctor two days ago and took a urine test and it was positive for Nitrates and Leukocytes, so they put me on different antibiotics. my culture came back today and they said no growth, no UTI. but why am I positive for nitrates and Leukocytes.
The urine may have shown no growth because you would have started the antibiotics before the urine culture was taken.
The antibiotics would mask the bacteria in the urine culture, making it negative.
In some cases, persons may have cystitis (inflammation of the bladder) due to non infectious causes. If the sterile cultures continue, you may need to assessed for these forms of cystitis
I hope this helps
