What Causes No Urge To Have A Bowel Movement Despite Taking Medications?

My wife had a mastectomy last Monday and has not had a bowel movement since last sunday. She has been taking ocycotin and valium since here surgery. She also has been taken stool softner. Yesterday she took some Ducalax and today she finished of the last of the ten pills I had bought. She took some miralax today but has had no luck in having a bowel movement, is there anything else she can try to help this process along?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Constipation is common in individuals taking opioid pain medications like Oxycontin. Its not something to worry about at this point. Continue with Miralax, encourage her to drink plenty of fluids and eat fiber rich foods. If this persists, you can ask your primary care physician for a prescription for drugs that specifically block opioid action in the gut.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
