Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Nose Bleeds After Switching From Zoloft To Lexapro?
I have changed over to Lexapro (2.5 weeks ago from Zoloft and am noticing more and more blood noses. I was on Zoloft for approx. 8 years but Pfizer have stopped producing it and therefore I changed over is this something I should worry about or will it sort itself out
Zoloft is Sertraline and used for anxiety and you were switched to Lexapro for the same problem, which contains Escitalopram. Well, these medicines are not much known to cause nosebleed hence I would advise you to consult an ENT Surgeon for proper evaluation of nosebleed, endoscopy and CT scan of nose and sinuses if required. These two things usually find the cause. Other causes such as hypertension and certain medicines like Aspirin can cause nosebleeds.
Once the cause is found the treatment will be specific. Most of the patients with anxiety have nose-pricking as a habit and is the commonest cause of nosebleed and it seems that Escitalopram is not much helping you. You can request for another brands of Sertraline. Stop pricking the nose or do not blow nose excessively if you have developed such a habit. Further management as per the cause found like if there is hypertension then proper control of blood pressure will be sufficient.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
