What Causes Nose Bleeds And Headache After Head Injury?

My son hit his head on the playground 3 weeks ago. He went to jump on the swing and the swing slid out from under him and he hit his head on the ground. Initially he had pain in the back of his head and over to his ear. Multiple goose eggs too. Acted completely normal, no vision issues, no memory loss, no confusion, etc. His only symptom was the headache. Since then he has been getting frequent headaches which I know can be from a concussion, but he has also been getting nosebleeds since. His headaches are easily treated with ibuprofen or tylenol. Should I take him in? I also work as a paramedic so I know warning signs, but the nosebleeds are throwing me off

Hello. Thanks for asking from HCM.

I can understand your concern. It is good that you have already ruled out dangerous signs of head injury, your son is conscious and oriented.

At present your son is having headache and nose bleed. As headache is responsive to medication, it is a good sign. But repeated nose bleed could be due to non healing wound in nose/repeated nose picking/old clotted blood which is coming out gradually after lysis of clot.

For management, you can check his nose and look for any open wound. Ask him to avoid nose picking as he might be doing it due to nose irritation. Look for any accumulated blood. Maintain hygiene. You can consult ENT specialist for evaluation of nose and cleaning of nose. Avoid self medication with ibuprofen as it can cause bleeding by inhibiting clot formation.

Thanks. Hope it will help you. Take care.
