What Causes Numbness And Pain In The Leg?

For many years I have experienced (infrequent) episodes in which my leg has felt almost like it has fallen asleep but without the intense pins and needles feeling. Instead it feels like my entire leg has gotten numb and heavy, but it s painful to shift even a little and I cannot force it to stop. It usually only lasts one minute. Any ideas as to what it could be?
