What Causes Numbness And Recurring Sharp Pain In The Shin Post Injury?

I fell and hit my shin very hard (it broke the skin) and turned blue at first. I iced it 15 on and off and elevated it for 12 hours. Now I ve noticed that part of my shin around the injury is numb and I still have some sharp pains on and off. Dull pain for the most part. What causes the numbness? Should I get an X-ray?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Recurring numbness and sharp pains in shin area, after an injury may be due to minor injury at the site, bone bruises , pinching of nerve due to pressure etc. Most of the times, a person with minor injuries will not need to see a doctor and the symptoms can be relieved by natural home remedies like application of ice packs, wrapping the injury / trauma site in a light bandage, rest to the affected part and keeping the affected part raised, will give relief in symptoms. Some times for relief in pain and inflammation OTC drugs like Tylenol or Advil etc. may be taken.

However, a person should seek medical help, if the pain, redness or swelling does not subside/decrease or becomes more intense after some time as well as if the skin becomes of unusual shape or a snapping sound is heard with movement of the affected part, it may denote a fracture requiring to see a doctor for proper evaluation & treatment accordingly.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
