What Causes Numbness And Soreness After A Quadruple By-pass Operation?
I had a quadruple by-pass operation about a year ago and the surgeon took ( harvested ) veins/arteries from my left leg below the knee to use to patch me up. Now my leg, which has felt slightly sore from time to time now seems to have gone mostly numb, cause me to limp a little when I walk. Is this normal?
The local complications in the leg, from where the veins have been grafted are common. These are pain, swelling and soreness. Usually these symptoms subside within 1-4 weeks. However, in some cases, these symptoms may persist for a long time. These symptoms are due to capillary leakage and impaired venous drainage as well as damage to lymphatic system and soft tissue.
Some times due to damage to nerves, a feeling of anesthesia, numbness or paresthesia may be felt in the area of damaged nerve. Depending on the extent of damage to the tissue, immunity of the patient, age and accompanying diseases of patient, the time for complete recovery may be variable. Usually with modern surgical techniques, recovery is complete with time. If the problem persists, then physiotherapy and controlled exercises may be helpful.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
