What Causes Numbness And Tingling In The Thumb And Index Finger?

I work with my hands (carpentry) daily, and the numbness and tingling in my left thumb and index finger came on recently and suddenly. I also had a traumatic skiers thumb injury in 1980. I also have noticed loss of strength and difficulty picking up small things like a nail with these digits. My question is, how bad will this get? Will I have greater difficulty working from now on? This doesn t seem like carpal tunnel syndrome, though I have a lot of repetitive motions.
