What Causes Numbness And Tingling Sensation On The Index Finger?

My left index finger becomes completely numb or tingling. Today, when the condition occurred, I noticed black and blue discoloration of my index finger at the base where it meets the hand. I elevated my hand for 20 minutes and the discoloration and numbness disappeared. What could be causing this? I am a 62 year old male. I exercise vigorously 3.5 times/week that includes lifting weights.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I think you may be suffering from Raynaud's syndrome. It is a syndrome of sudden narrowing of blood vessels usually when exposed to cold that causes discolouration and pain in fingers.

It is usually caused by bad circulation of the limbs. It may be without a cause, or accompanying autoimmune disease such as rheumatoid arthritis or sometimes caused by diabetes.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Olgeta Xhufka,
