What Causes Numbness Below Knee After A Injury?

I fell and injured my knee two and half months ago. I wore a knee brace per doctors orders for two months. There is now a cyst that I am having removed in a week and a tare in my meniscus. However, I have a numbness just below my knee. What could be causing that numbness and should I let my orthopedic surgeon know when I go in for surgery?

Hello,

You fell and injured your knee few months ago. Your treating doctor made you wear a knee brace. You have numbness below the knee. You have a cyst and a torn meniscus. Numbness below the knee after injury of the knee is commonly caused due to nerve impingement, compression of the nerve or nerve damage. Fluid accumulation within the knee due to a large Baker’s cyst, cyst can create pressure on the nerve (tibial nerve) and trigger numbness.

You should get the cyst examined and treated (aspiration, drainage or removal by surgery). You will be given a course of antibiotics and pain relieving medicines for faster and better recovery. Get clinically examined by an Orthopedics, get treated at the earliest. Take care of your hygiene and control your blood glucose level at all cost.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
