Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Numbness From The Hip To The Ankle On The Right Leg?
I experience numbness in my right leg from hip to ankle (outside part of leg) followed by what appears to be a rash ( I believe it to be ringworm) in the exact same spot on my right buttock. It happens sort of randomly but I have noticed it happens after I have had a day of lounging or sitting on a plane for a prolonged period of time. Should I be concerned about the numbness in my leg or is it just a sign that a ringworm outbreak is about to happen? It usually only lasts one day.
Numbness in limbs is mostly caused by peripheral nerve damage. Nerve damage is almost always permanent as nerve tissue does not grow back easily. One can only prevent further damage by identifying its cause and taking treatment, but the damaged nerve cannot be repaired. There is a window period of a few days between getting numbness and the nerve being permanently damaged. Thus, if numbness is treated during this period, the permanent damage to nerves can be avoided. There are many causes of peripheral nerve damage such as diabetes, prolonged mechanical pressure on nerve such as prolonged sitting, chronic renal failure, leprosy, vertebral compression, vasculitis, shingles and hypothyroidism etc. Numbness is not related to ringworm infection. Advice 1. Methylcobalamin 500 mcg once daily per oral for 3 months 2. Avoid prolonged sitting 3. Investigation – blood sugar (F & PP)
Thanks
