What Causes Numbness In Foot Radiating Towards Upper Leg With Slipped Disc Condition?

Hi, I herniated a disc in my lower back (L4-5) and have been having a slow recovering. i have had no pain for two months with numbness in my foot. the only time I get pain is when i do sommething i shouldn t, like vacumming, or bending over to clean the cat litter. I started swimming 2 and a half weeks ago. there was a short period of time where my numbness/tingling was much better but in the last few days it has started to to travel up my leg along the path of the nervve. I am not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing? Does this mean that my nerve is being pinched less or more?

Physical Therapist or Physiotherapist 's  Response
Hi,

thank you for providing the brief history of you.

A detailed assessment is advised. Both neurological and musculoskeletal.

As mentioned by you, you already have L4-L5 herniated disc, which was slow in recovering. I would suggest you to take an MRI of the lumbar spine if not taken, to see the soft tissue status at the lumbar spine.

Also, you need to visit a physical therapist, as by performing proper exercises for the stabilization of the spine, the nerve impingement can be reduced. On a longer run , you need to keep performing exercises to avoid the reduction in the inter vertebral space. As this is the long term solution.

In my clinical practice, i have been seeing lumbar disc herniation, a correct approach to physical exercise helps regain the normal functions and also a long term help to my patients.
