What Causes Numbness In Hands, Shortness Of Breath And Dizziness?

Hello....I am a 50 year old woman who is slightly overweight but am physically active. I recently quit smoking (it has been 6 months). I have been to the emergency room approx. 3 times within the past 2 years being diagnosed with Pneumonia and Bronchitis. Over the past month I have been noticing numbness in my hands (primarily in my fingers - both hands), shortness of breath very easily, if I bend over or basically move I get light headed/dizzy, vision does not seem as clear as it should be, periodically get a sharp pain on the left side of my sternum and my left leg (from thigh to foot) get cramped going down the back of the leg. All of the symptoms have been progressively been increasing today to the point I am very uncomfortable...I just feel like my body needs oxygen or something. Please advise...Thank you - Donna

Hello,

I appreciate you have a active lifestyle and have given up smoking. Both need a strong will. Lemme first summarize your symptoms:
1) Numbness in both hands
2) Shortness of breath on exertion
3) Dizziness on bending or moving your head
4) Occasional chest pain on left side and pain in left lower limb

Numbness in both hands and dizziness or vertigo can be symptoms of the following conditions like:
1) Cervical disc degenerative disease
2) Cervical radiculopathy
3) Cervical spine disc prolapse

All the above conditions can be treated as follows:
a) Cervical or neck collar
b) Pain medication like NSAIDs Ibuprofen twice daily for 1 week
c) Refraining from lifting heavy weights and driving for long hours
d) Neck muscles strengthening exercises

Other symptoms of shortness of breath and chest pain may be due to the following:
1) Right heart failure
2) Congestive cardiac failure
3) Pulmonary hypertension
4) Severe pneumonia
5) Severe bronchitis
6) Myocardial infarction
7) Pulmonary embolism
8) Chronic kidney disease

To those who come to my clinic with similar complaints I suggest the following
Chest X-ray PA view
ECG
2D echo
Complete blood picture
Kidney and liver function tests

I would suggest you to see a physician and undergo the above tests to accurately diagnose your condition and for appropriate treatment.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
