What Causes Numbness In Left Side Of Tongue With Pain Behind The Ear?

My husband's left side of his tongue is numb (he also bites this side of tongue when he tries to eat) along with bad pain, that will not go away, about an inch or two behind his left ear. This has been going on for about a week. We are both worried but I can't get him to go to a Dr. Please give me an idea what could be causing this.

Hi Dear ,

Welcome to HCM,

As per your query you are suffering from numbness in left side of tongue with pain behind the ear .Numbness on tongue can occur due to nerve dysfunction or infection . Damage to the lingual nerve that supplies the tongue and it can lead to numbness. Pain behind the ear can occur due to lymphadenopathy , ear infection or TMJ problem.

I would suggest you to take Vitamin B complex supplements as it help in nerve regeneration and do alternate warm and cool compresses over tongue.

I would also suggest you to consult ENT specialist for proper examination . Doctor may order test like throat swab test , viral culture test , check eat with otoscope or blood tests . Doctor may examine with otoscope . Doctor may prescribe antibiotics ( amoxicillin ) along with anti inflammatory . If numbness or chemical test doesn't improve then consult neurologist .
