What Causes Numbness In Legs While Travelling?

Since I get married last Sep, I live in a different location and take a shuttle bus to work and back home everyday. The ride takes 40 minutes. Recently, my legs feel numb on the shuttle bus. I start to feel uneasy since 15min on the bus. I am still at my early 30s. Would this be anything to do with poor blood flow? What can I do about it?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You are experiencing weakness and tingling in your legs. Tingling or numbness in one leg, or both, may be caused by compression of the blood flow or due to a nerve getting compressed. The nerves may be affected by a deficiency in vitamin B12 and inflammation within the spinal cord. Take supplements. The numbness can dissipate quickly or be felt for a prolonged period of time, depending on the underlying cause.

Numbness or paresthesia causes tingling, prickling, or a burning sensation. Other medical conditions are caused due to circulatory conditions such as deep vein thrombosis, peripheral artery disease, frostbite, Buerger’s disease, arteriovenous malformation, etc. Osteoporosis, a back injury, herniated disk, fracture or bone break, degenerative disk disease, and nerve entrapment all are associated with numbness.

Leg numbness can also be a symptom of a neurological disease known as alcohol leg, systemic lupus, hypothyroidism, diabetic neuropathy, lead poisoning, etc. Get clinically examined by a GP, get all required tests and investigations done. Get the pathology causing the symptoms treated at the earliest.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
