What Causes Numbness In Middle Toe Of Left Foot?

My middle toe on my left foot feels numb sometimes. My left hand feels numb at night. When I sleep on my left side, this happens. I think I might have poor circulation or carpal tunnel. I had surgery 12 years ago on my right hand for it. The numbness feels like that s what s going on.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Numbness of the toe can occur because of injury to the foot, nerve damage (neuropathy), and poor circulation to the foot (in patients with diabetes and peripheral vascular disease). The most common cause of toe numbness is direct compression of the nerves of the foot from footwear. Always wear comfortable footwear. Many people find relief from numbness in toes with different shoes, rest, or warmth.

If your problem continues you can consult and get examined by a neurologist or a podiatrist. Your treating doctor may recommend NCV test to detect numbness and for neuropathy, he may recommend blood tests, nerve function tests, imaging tests, nerve and skin biopsy, get all the tests done so that the treatment can be started at the earliest.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
