What Causes Numbness In The Hands After Taking Lipitor?

After taking Lipitor for a couple months, I would wake in the morning with my hands had gone to sleep . this got worse and later would be up to my elbows. At first I thought it was because I was sleeping funny on my new mattress, but when it started to affect my feet, I quit taking Lipitor. These symptoms immed. disappeared. I have not been able to find these symptoms listed anywhere as a side effect of statins. Have you ever heard of it?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Yes....you are having this due to statins.
Statins (Lipitor in your case) can indeed produce neurological effects. These drugs are typically prescribed to lower cholesterol and thereby reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke but they can influence your sleep and behavior, cause fatigue and myopathy, cause neuropathy and perhaps even change the course of neurodegenerative conditions.
Peripheral neuropathy results from damage to the peripheral nerves and causes weakness, numbness and pain in the hands and feet.
But if you have developed these neuropathy symptoms, you should immediately talk with your doctor, who may reconsider the use of statins.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. AJEET SINGH, General & Family Physician
