Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
i ve had 1 episode of MS attack 4 years ago - clinically isolated syndrome. I started taking injections of Avonex but stopped after 1 year. Now i am experiencing mild numbness in my hands, on a regular basis (manageable) but severely painful numbness in my hands when I wake up -- for about 2-3 weeks now. The numbness goes away within 10 minutes. But the severity of the pain wakes me out of my dreams. Am I having some kind of MS attack? or are they just symptoms that go along the damage to my spine from my single and only MS attack?
Well, there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in a query like a sign of nerve damage, repetitive stress, injuries, bacterial or viral infections, toxic exposures, and systemic diseases such as diabetes and peripheral neuropathy. There can be other reasons also like nerve entrapment, carpal tunnel syndrome, ulnar nerve palsy, hormonal imbalances and vitamin deficiencies (vitamin B1.)
I would suggest you to consult orthopedic surgeon for proper examination . The doctor may order CT scan, ask for certain movements and complete blood tests. The doctor may prescribe muscle relaxants, recommend physical therapy of arm and hand along with stretching exercises and recommend particular stretching exercises.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
