What Causes Numbness In The Knee?

ABOUT 1 MONTH AGO I STARTED TO EXPERIENCE NUMBNESS IN THE AREA OF MY LEFT KNEE. AREA IS ABOUT 10CM X 6CM ON THE LATERAL ASPECT OF MY LEFT DISTAL FEMUR JUST ABOVE THE KNEE JOINT. WAS ADVISED IT WAS PROBABLY DUE TO INCREASE IN ACTIVITY (WALKING STAIRS AT LUNCH FOR EXERCISE). HAVE NOT DONE STAIRS IN OVER 3 WEEKS AND STILL IS NUMB. IN ADDITION I RANDOMLY GET PAIN ON 3RD AND 4TH TOES OF LEFT FOOT. THIS JUST STARTED IN THE LAST DAY OR TWO. I AM IN GOOD HEALTH AT AGE 55, FEMALE AND TAKE NO MEDICATIONS. ANY IDEAS???

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Numbness in the knee can be caused by compression of the nerve, nerve impingement, trauma, infection, inflammation, damage to the nerve, etc. Other medical conditions that can cause it are sciatica, peripheral neuropathy, FM, OA/RA, etc. You are suggested to give rest to your legs, do not overuse. Take diet rich in vitamin B6, B12 or supplements for it is good for your nerves. Avoid addictions if any. If obese loose weight. Take balance healthy diet and balance it with exercise and walking but do not overexert your self.

Heat therapy will effectively give you relieve. You can try cold compression as well. Get clinically examined by a neurologist, get nerve conduction velocity tests, blood tests, imaging tests done to detect the degree of nerve damage so that you can be treated at the earliest. Take Neurobion Forte, once daily for 20 days. Take acetaminophen, one SOS when pain.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
