What Causes Numbness In Thumb, Fore And Little Fingers?

My nephew has multiple symptoms seemingly to do with nerves being impinged from neck, down to his hands...right hand thumb, forefinger and little finger numbness and not mobile; left hand cramping at unknown intervals with no warnings. He has had chest pain that has been evaluated and find no heart problems. Has a lot of pain in joints for last 10 years but has been evaluated by Rheumatologists for RA and told not apparently that or else possibly sero-negative. One Dr thinks the hands are carple tunnel, along with right elbow pain and wants him to undergo surgery for that. He is an RN with lots of experience in step-down unit from ICU and still has no clue what might be going on. He was sent to sports medicine drs, who had him do exercises for his neck that completely exasperated the chest and hand symptoms. Any ideas of some kind of systemic chronic disease? Nothing conclusive from any lab tests except a once positive HLA B27 but they say it isnt AS.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Well, there can be many reason for symptoms you mention in queries like sign of nerve damage, repetitive stress, injuries, bacterial or viral infections, toxic exposures, and systemic diseases such as diabetes and peripheral neuropathy.

There can be other reasons also like nerve entrapment, carpal tunnel syndrome, ulnar nerve palsy, hormonal imbalances and vitamin deficiencies (vitamin B1. I would suggest you consult an orthopedic surgeon for proper examination.

The doctor may order CT scan, ask for certain movements and complete blood tests.

The doctor may prescribe muscle relaxants, recommend physical therapy of arm and hand along with stretching exercises and recommend particular stretching exercises.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Iven Romic Rommstein, General Surgeon
