Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Numbness In Toes After An Ankle Injury?
Hello, I fell off a motor bike about 2 and a bit weeks ago and injured my right foot/ankle. It was swollen for a few days and I could walk fairly normally after about a week. I also have a gash about the size of a quarter on the bottom of my foot, near the outer edge. I am now getting numbness in my big toe. This has been happening for about 3-4 days and it only seems to be getting worse. I m just wondering if they might be related and how urgently I need to see a doctor? I had it x-rayed but I am traveling through Southeast Asia and I m not sure I trust how they placed my foot when they took 1 x-Ray scan. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
As you had pain and swelling of ankle after fall, it might be an ankle sprain, a fracture of any ankle bone or just a contusion. You need to get examined as early as possible by an orthopedic doctor to rule out any fracture or nerve injury.
Usually, numbness in toes happens when nerve gets involved. As you already had an X-ray done, please show the same to the doctor and let him decide if it is right or not. Till you consult a doctor, you can use pain relief medications like ibuprofen daily twice.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
